Ran 5 miles...

The trail was SOAKED from the crazy down pour we had earlier! I had to find my way around massive puddles-I just glided over the small ones, I had to run slowly stiff-legged with knees bent when running over the EXTREMELY slick wooden pathways-they make up about 1 mile or more of the trail, and I had to avoid slipping in the mud pits...note to self: don't run that trail when it has rained hard...and if I do decide to run it after a heavy rain-wear SHORTS!
I almost slipped because my pants got stuck on what I'm assuming was a nail or branch poking up on the wooden path so I had to hold my pants up PLUS run slow...let me tell you I could feel all my muscles from my glutes to my calves working when running the wooden pathways!

It was an awesome run though. I had a ton of energy today! I ate well and it's getting closer to the end of my moon cycle so I'm rejuvenated and energized!
I scared off the Great Blue who inhabits the area. Most of the mushrooms looked a bit shabby from the rain...I ran the last 2 miles with a Bolete in hand...

During my run I thought, (you find yourself thinking about all sorts of shit when running), about how I have an addictive personality. And I just thought about how fucking thankful I am that I never got involved with drugs and came to the realization that I'm becoming addicted to running and I don't care...I'm stoked! YES, I'm happy, I'm addicted to something healthy...I love that thought and feeling! And I PRAY that injury stays at bay!

Another thing that I thought about was-WHY is it so much easier to run 5 mile days than it is to run 4 mile days?!! I don't get it!!! HAHA!

Okay, I think that's it for now...oh, also, I think it might be the sports drinks that are making my stomach really upset...so I should def find an alternative...for now I will just have to deal...oh, and, I need to remember to keep checking on the persimmon trees along the trail...they're still not ripe...

Oh, so to answer your question from awhile back, I do listen to music on runs, but only on treadmill and some road runs. I don't like them on trail runs for obvious reasons. Many races are banning iPods from races and disqualifying people who use them, although a few races actually promote their use. The argument against is that they interfere with emergency instructions, make runners less aware, and offer a competitive advantage. The arguments for are that they make races more open to the public that uses the players, and make the races more fun for more people. They're officially against USTAF rules. I know some runners who have had a hard time giving up the mp3 players. It forces them to do the sort of thinking you describe in your post and increases the mental aspect of the sport. So it's a good idea to do at least some of your training without headphones. Runners world has an article about the debate.

More and more I like listening to audiobooks on long, slow runs. I have an audio version of The World Without Us which is great inspiration. I have never done a race with headphones, as I'm usually doing my best to concentrate and listen to my body.

Yea, I read about all of the USTAF rules and all that other shit...that's why I asked. I was just wondering how common it was. I'll just have to look for a race that allows music...

When running I think A LOT-having music playing doesn't keep me from doing that-I think too much if you ask me.
I run most runs with music. Even on trail runs-but keep the volume low so that way I can focus on the wildlife and what's going on in their world. Sometimes I turn it up on purpose so that way I have to pay attention to my surroundings more...I see (and feel) A LOT when I do this...it's amazing what you see when your hearing is taken away...
But yea, I really don't hear the music...it's more for my body to follow while I get lost in thought and my surroundings. I put a playlist of running music on my ipod. Most of it's shit that I wouldn't listen to normally...it's just to help me keep a nice fast/steady pace...

I do plan to do runs w/o...I have before...running through the city with no music is fucking BORING though...I can't even think about anything other than "WHEN WILL THIS END?!"
Pavement all looks the same and so do the road signs...
I'm all for those who can do w/o...but I like having music...even if it is dangerous...

So yea, I'll just have to find a marathon that doesn't mind music...hopefully not all will become tainted by stupid "safety" rules...

It's funny reading running mags-they always have an article about runners conflictions with ipods...HAHA!
