8.5.08

Even though I ran at 1AM I'm counting this as my Tuesday run! I feel good. I haven't gone out running in several days...once again my moon sickness sucked up all of my energy! I had the worst cramps yesterday. Pain, shakes, sweat, chills, vomit, shit, more pain, thought I was going to die, I wanted to cry but I was in too much pain to do so. I know, this has nothing to do with running, but I didn't do much yesterday because of the 4 hours of hell!

So I was thinking today about running and the races I'm going to take part in. I need to find which races I'm going to do and then I need to sign up. First I'm going to do a 5k, then a 10k or I might skip the 10k and go straight to a half-marathon. Next spring (or fall) I plan to do the big 26.2 miles! And I'm hoping to do that 70 miler in PA next summer too...we'll see...

Now I need to find the races that I want to run (I have the 5k planned already) and I also need to write Survival International. I really want to run for them. I hope that can happen.

Tonight I ran 4 miles. I love running 2 miles, 3 miles, 5 miles (is my favorite), and 6 miles...but 4 miles I FUCKING HATE! I don't know what it is about 4 mile runs but I seriously HATE and DREAD them! I can run 5 and 6 miles with ease...4 miles kills me though. I don't get it! HAHA!

Anyway. I ran 4 miles tonight, I'm pooped and need a shower. I think I run another 4 miles tomorrow. I hate running so late but it is when temps are coolest so I guess it will have to continue this way. I haven't lifted weights in weeks now and I plan to start lifting full body 3 days/week. I miss the iron!

Alright, time for that shower and time for some much needed sleep.

Well, I've been back in WI since Tuesday and so now I'm back to commenting on your blog. Only now with a fancy new google account.

Good idea on not running 26.2 miles. That'd be the recipe for injury and you'd be hating life as you have to sit and recover. Also good idea on training for a half. I think running the half will give you a good glimpse into running culture and will encourage you to run more. But that's just my guess.

My first week in Jersey I did well with my running, keeping fairly close to my schedule, but the second week was disaster (although I did do a fair amount of weight training and think my body needed a few days off). I don't know how people run when it's 90 degrees out. I saw so many people running in the middle of the day, getting scorched by the sun, and the humidity was around 90 percent. I ended up doing more treadmill running than anything because I couldn't handle that weather. Good idea to run late at night - when I did that in Jersey I enjoyed running through the sprinklers on people's front lawns.

Since I've been back I did did a 7 miler on Wed. and a 9 miler on Thu. I took today off in preparation for a 30 miler tomorrow morning - the most I've ever run at once - and all on single track, hilly trail. I plan on running it slow as hell - probably the slowest I've ever ran and with walk breaks interspersed. I'll be doing 20 on Sunday. Ultra training means weekends from hell.

I still have tendinitis in my foot. I hear that tendons are the slowest thing to heal in the body - and that makes sense as the pain has been around for over a month now. Also, I was getting bad GI distress on my runs - and I think that was a symptom of overtraining. It's been better the past few runs - knock on wood.

They finally put up the elevation profile and full course description for my ultra race.
Going up and down 1000 ft repeatedly is going to be intense. My quads will be punished like never before. I'm going to be doing more squats and hill training to try to build up the strength. For comparison, compare the above numbers with the elevation profile numbers for the Boston Marathon, which is considered to be a very tough marathon course. And remember Western States makes both of these look like walks in the park with climbs of around 18,000 feet through the Sierras. My hope is that ultra training will improve my leg strength and endurance for when I do run Boston, although I'm likely to be a bit slower and will have to do a lot of speed work between November and April to get back in regular old marathon shape.

So the Olympics are on - of course I'm only interested in seeing the results of the marathon (and baseball). The nationalist BS aside, the marathon should be pretty interesting and although I'm not rooting for anyone in particular, Ryan Hall is pretty inspirational. The dude broke the half marathon US record on his first half marathon and easily set a new US record at the Olympic trials. He's a jesus freak, but whatever.

Do you have a blog now? How was the trip back to WI? Luke is here and he just told this story...well, go read the story:

And another source:
http://www.welt.de/english-news/arti2280499/Greyhound_bus_killer_beheads_victim_and_then_eats_flesh_.html

It's a crazy fucking story...makes you never want to get on a bus again!
I always told Kevin that I hated being on the bus because it's mostly crazy people who ride them.

Anyway, running! Yea, I'm glad that I decided to hold off on the 26 miles! I'm going to work up to the half-marathon and then I'll worry about the 26 later.
The heat is crazy down this way. The only time to run is at night - which I hate because the temps don't cool until 10-11PM. It's insane! I'm usually really tired by then so it sucks. And I'll never understand how some of these fucking people run at noon...I really don't know how they do it...maybe it's because they don't have much on, but still, the Sun BEATS down on you...I swear to you that the Sun feels hotter down this way. I guess it has something to do with the way the rays hit the earth, I don't know about all that science but I do know that it is HOT down this way and it makes running HELL!!!

And I can't find sprinklers going off down here because they aren't allowed due to the water issues!!! Yup, HELL!

Are you feeling a bit better during your runs? Injury really dampers shit doesn't it?! Lately my left leg has been killing me. It has been for years though. It's mainly in my groin area. I need to find a way to heal it properly...like I said though, it has been an issue for over 10 years now and it is now starting to get irritated from running...

Yea, that ultra that you are going to do is going to be hell!!! HAHA! And I will never run a course out west! Fuck that! I do think that running this ultra will def help you get prepared for the Boston.
I'll check out those sites that you sent after I send this off...

I can't wait to move back north so that I can train in higher elevation. GBG is above 1,000 feet...we're not moving back there but I like knowing that I can easily drive to an area that has mountains between 2,000-3,000 feet when we do get back up to W-PA, so that way I can get some real training in. I really want to run/hike the Rachel Carson Trail...it's in PA and is 30-40 miles...I guess it is pretty intense.

But um, yea, I haven't been watching or keeping up with the Olympics. I want to but haven't. I did want to see the marathon part of it all...I've been paying more attention to all the bullshit going on between Georgia and Russia...we're living in crazy times Evan...

Alright, I need to go eat before my run...I only have 6 miles tonight! HAHA...and you have what, 30 miles!!! MWAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!

I noticed that you can't see the full urls to the sources that I sent about the Greyhound murder...

I'm sure you know this trick already...
If you are using Firefox go to View and then click on page style and then click on no style, that way you can see the full url's and you can check out those articles.

You really need to check out that story...it's a reminder to NEVER trust anybody and to remember we are living during fucked up times!
